《Nanyang Jellyfish  南洋水母》

​

“Nanyang Jelly Fish” is a collaboration between the all-female video production team from Sixpence Studio in Singapore and the dance artist Cai Ying, to explore feminine experiences of the body during migration in surroundings that are so ever-changing that seems fluidic.

 

Nanyang is a sinocentric Chinese term to refer to South East Asia among the migrants in early days. The Chinese translation of Jelly Fish literally means “the mother of water”. In ancient Chinese literature, there is a saying that the female body is made of water.

 

What unique experience have you got when moving into a new region? How does that associate to your past experience elsewhere? Did that unseal new levels of perception?

 

With these questions, the artists interviewed 5 females migrated from different regions with different cultural background and professions. They shared about their individual body-related memories in their own language and dialect, consisting of the voice over in the video.

 

Inspired by the impermanence of life during the meeting and parting, the artists try to explore how the independent women deal with others, cities, and their own desires as they drift.

「南洋水母」嘗試探索女性在流動的地理環境中的身體體驗與想象。創作者在新加坡邀請了五位來自不同地區、不同背景的女性，分享她們作為移民獨特的身體記憶與經驗。

 

「南洋」為早期中國移民對東南亞的泛稱，「水母」意指流動的女性身體。
