in-between is inspired by childhood games from the artist CAI Ying. In this work, Ying wants to provide a "game" , of which the rule is ambiguous, complex, chaotic and have endless possibility. It will not try to solve the issue, but rather, expose the lost/confusion, fear, anxiety and at the same time the beauty, fun and joy one might experience when going through new experiences.
In-between is a participative event-based performance that explores how people co-exist in such changes to find their own state of freedom. The performance brings viewers to explore their own experience between the individual and the collective, and the process of change itself, a process how people constantly identify, enact, adapt to their own orders and from others. Ying wants to throw viewers back on themselves, in a space and a situation, to bring the awareness of themselves, awareness while experiencing in this flowing relationship.
in-between start the journey during the Yale-China Arts Fellowship program. This unique work is also an experiment that CAI Ying collaborate with interdisciplinary artists both from Hong Kong and US to seek possibilities and varieties of choreographic thinking.
